Why More Couples are Choosing a Celebrant-Led Wedding

by | Jul 16, 2026 | Weddings

If you have recently started planning your wedding, you have probably come across the term celebrant-led wedding. They are without a doubt becoming increasingly popular across the UK, especially here in the beautiful Cotswolds, Bristol and the South West, where couples are looking for something more personal, meaningful and memorable than a traditional ceremony.

One of the first questions I am often asked is, “Can we legally get married with a celebrant?”

The short answer is not yet, but don’t let that put you off. In fact, thousands of couples are choosing celebrant-led weddings every year because they offer something a legal ceremony simply cannot.

Can you legally get married with a celebrant in England?

At the moment, independent celebrants cannot legally solemnise marriages in England and Wales. This means you still need to complete the legal paperwork at a registry office.

Many couples choose to do this a few days or weeks before their wedding with two witnesses. The legal appointment is usually simple, relaxed and takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

Then, when your wedding day arrives, you can enjoy the ceremony you have always imagined—written entirely around your story, your personalities and your relationship.

Think of it this way: The legal registration takes care of the paperwork. Your celebrant ceremony creates the memories.

Could the law change?

There is encouraging news for couples who dream of having every part of their wedding wrapped into one beautiful ceremony.

Marriage law in England and Wales has been under review following the Law Commission’s recommendations to modernise how weddings are conducted. One proposal is to move away from a system centred on licensed venues and instead focus on authorised officiants. If these reforms are introduced in the future, independent celebrants could potentially conduct legally binding wedding ceremonies.

Although no changes have come into effect yet, many within the wedding industry remain optimistic that the law will evolve to give couples greater freedom and choice.

For now, couples still need to complete the legal marriage separately at a registry office before or after their celebrant-led ceremony.

Why are more couples choosing celebrant-led weddings?

Modern couples want more than a standard script. They want laughter, emotion, personal stories and a ceremony that feels genuinely like them.

Unlike a traditional ceremony, a celebrant-led wedding gives you complete freedom.

Together, we can create a ceremony that reflects your personalities, values and journey as a couple.

There are no restrictive templates or time limits—just a ceremony that is uniquely yours.

Your ceremony, your way

One of the greatest advantages of choosing a celebrant is flexibility.

You can:

  • Get married in a beautiful garden, woodland or family home.
  • Choose a stunning venue anywhere in the Cotswolds, Bristol or the South West.
  • Include your children, pets or other family members.
  • Write your own vows (with as much help as you like).
  • Include cultural traditions or symbolic rituals such as handfasting or a ring warming.
  • Choose readings and music that truly mean something to you.
  • Make your ceremony relaxed, elegant, humorous, romantic—or a wonderful combination of all four.

There are no rules about what your ceremony should look like. Only what feels right for you.

More time to enjoy the moment

Many couples tell me they have often felt rushed during their legal ceremony.

A Celebrant-led ceremony allows time to breathe, laugh, tell your story and create moments your guests will remember for years to come.

Whether that is sharing how you met, surprising each other with personal vows, involving family members or friends, or including a meaningful symbolic ritual, every element is chosen because it matters to you.

Perfect for outdoor weddings

Living and working in the beautiful Cotswolds means I am fortunate to conduct ceremonies in some truly spectacular locations—from rolling countryside and rustic barns to elegant manor houses, vineyards and hidden gardens.

I also work with wonderful couples across Bristol and the South West, helping them create ceremonies in places that hold special meaning for them.

A ceremony your guests will remember

One of the loveliest compliments I often receive is when guests tell me afterwards: “That was the most personal wedding ceremony we have ever been to.”

Your ceremony should not feel like a formality before the celebrations begin. It should be one of the highlights of your wedding day.

When your guests laugh, shed a tear, smile and feel genuinely connected to your story, you’ve created something far more memorable than simply signing a register.

Is a celebrant-led wedding right for you?

A celebrant-led ceremony could be perfect if you:

  • Want complete freedom over your ceremony.
  • Are you planning an outdoor wedding or a unique venue?
  • Want to include family traditions or symbolic rituals.
  • Would like to write your own vows.
  • Prefer a relaxed and personal atmosphere.
  • Want your ceremony to reflect who you are as a couple.

If that sounds like you, a celebrant-led wedding may be exactly what you are looking for.

Planning your wedding in the Cotswolds, Bristol or the South West?

Every love story is unique, and I believe every ceremony should be too.

As an independent celebrant based in the Cotswolds, I also work with couples throughout Bristol and the South West to create warm, heartfelt and completely personalised wedding ceremonies that capture who they are and what matters most to them.

Whether you are planning an intimate elopement, a grand country house celebration or a relaxed outdoor wedding surrounded by family and friends, I would love to help you create a ceremony that is every bit as unforgettable as the day itself.

If you are looking for a celebrant who will take the time to get to know you, tell your story with warmth and authenticity, and create a ceremony filled with personality, love, and laughter, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Let’s create a ceremony that is as unique as your love story.
